Studying the Pulsation of Mira Variables in the Ultraviolet

چکیده
We present results from an empirical study of the Mg II h & k emission lines of selected Mira variable stars, using spectra from the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE). The stars all exhibit similar Mg II behavior during the course of their pulsation cycles. The Mg II flux always peaks after optical maximum near pulsation phase φ = 0.2 − 0.5, although the Mg II flux can vary greatly from one cycle to the next. The lines are highly blueshifted, with the magnitude of the blueshift decreasing with phase. The widths of the Mg II lines are also phase-dependent, decreasing from about 70 km s −1 to 40 km s −1 between φ = 0.2 and φ = 0.6. We also study other UV emission lines apparent in the IUE spectra, most of them Fe II lines. These lines are much narrower and not nearly as blueshifted as the Mg II lines. They exhibit the same phase-dependent flux behavior as Mg II, but they do not show similar velocity or width variations.

LINEAR PULSATION CHARACTERISTICS OF MIRA VARIABLE STARS
The linear adiabatic pulsation-periods of Mira variable stars have been derived. Approximately 2701[1]models were calculated for M = 0.7 MΘ to 2 MΘ stars with radii from 180 RΘ to 340 RΘ and luminosities from 2800 LΘ to 10,000 LΘ. The chemical composition of all models is (X,Z) = (0.7,0.02). From the result of this study, linear relations on Luminosity-Period-Mass relationship and luminosity-pe...
متن کاملThe derivation of pulsation velocities from Doppler line profiles in M-type Mira variables
Model atmospheres for pulsating Mira variables have been used to examine the correction factor that should be used to convert radial velocities derived from the Doppler profiles of observed infrared lines into the velocities immediately above and below the strong shock in the atmosphere. The correction factor varies by a moderate amount depending on the lines selected. Correction factors of ∼1....
متن کاملMode switching in the nearby Mira-like variable R Doradus
We discuss visual observations spanning nearly 70 years of the nearby semiregular variable R Doradus. Using wavelet analysis, we show that the star switches back and forth between two pulsation modes having periods of 332 days and about 175 days, the latter with much smaller amplitude. Comparison with model calculations suggests that the two modes are the first and third radial overtone, with t...
متن کاملAngular Size Measurements Of Mira Variable Stars At 2 . 2 μ m . II
We present angular size measurements of 22 oxygen-rich Mira variable stars. These data are part of a long term observational program using the Infrared Optical Telescope Array (IOTA) to characterize the observable behavior of these stars. Complementing the infrared angular size measurements, values for variable star phase, spectral type, bolometric flux and distance were established for stars i...
متن کاملLong-Period Variability in o Ceti
We carried out a new and sensitive search for long-period variability in the prototype of the Mira class of long-period pulsating variables, o Ceti (Mira A), the closest and brightest Mira variable. We conducted this search using an unbroken light curve from 1902 to the present assembled from the visual data archives of five major variable star observing organizations from around the world. We ...
